Heavenly bodies gene loves jezebel7/31/2023 ![]() ![]() They were not hugely influential and loved and loathed in equal measure. Gene Loves Jezebel was one of the better acts of the later ‘80s in the modern rock genre. Their label was also shutting down, leaving the band with an uncertain future. To some degree greater success seemed to be at hand when “Jealous” achieved a peak of #68 on the US chart and a #1 spot on the US Alt-Rock chart, but when their next album, Heavenly Bodies, came out in 1993 they were unable to achieve much success with it. It would be their last shot at gaining larger success given their sound was falling out of favour as the dominant music styles moved away from the stylized pop of the band. “Tangled Up in You” and “Kiss of Life” were among the best songs they’d recorded. ![]() Jay Aston continued with the band, releasing an album in 1990, Kiss of Life, which proved to be another solid album filled with many quality songs consistent with the band’s sound. “The Motion of Love” was just the first song to crack the US charts at #87. Unloved by core Goth and alternative audiences as being too pop sounding and too close in style to the hair-metal bands of the time, yet with a sound that was too different for mass audiences and not rock enough for the heavy metal crowd, they rode in a space that limited their overall fan base despite the quality of the music. The differences in opinion between the brothers encapsulated the challenge Gene Loves Jezebel was having with its career. ![]() I recall “Desire” being a prominent song of the time, but its chart success – or lack thereof – suggests it was less the breakthrough for them than I thought. Moderate chart success came with their singles reaching the top 100 in the UK charts, and “Motion of Love” reaching #88 in the US. Discover and House of Dolls are filled with catchy, dark pop melodies with outsized choruses, all built on solid R&B structures. That period was a weak one for modern rock, and Gene Loves Jezebel was one of the bright lights, helping bridge modern rock from the lighter, synth-driven period of new wave into the guitar-laden era of grunge. They came to my attention when the great song, “Always A Flame,” was on a Vertigo Sampler album I had.Īfter a move to their label’s parent, Beggar’s Banquet, and a deal with Geffen in the US, the major label support helped them issue two of the best albums of the latter half of the 1980s. The second album was also strong and developed their sound, moving to a larger, more expansive structure. After some promising attention around their early indie singles, their first album, Promise, seemed to be setting them on their way after a #8 spot on the UK Indie chart. It was guitar-driven, with echoey vocals and heavy bass-infused rhythms. Their early sound was the darker pop similar to the likes of Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Cure, The Cult, Cocteau Twins, and Theatre of Hate. Rome instrumenta vocalia slave7/31/2023 ![]() ![]() Though ethnicity seems to have played little role in who would be Roman slaves, it did seem to play a part in what tasks they would be assigned to once in service. It's also been estimated that Julius Caesar, upon his conquest of Gaul, may have captured and enslaved 500,000 people. The Romans simply needed to replenish the stock, and the legions provided the means to do so.Īs examples at the end of the Third Macedonian War in 168 BC, it was recorded that as many as 150,000 residents of Epirus were sold in Roman bondage. They were rounded up first from among the Italian tribes, where it spread to Carthage, Greece, Macedonia, Gaul and all over the eastern provinces, with little regard for origin. The only thing the Romans held in deference was whether or not someone was a Roman.īy the mid to late imperial period, citizenship was a rather non-exclusive status, and ethnicity played little part. There is no evidence to suggest that the Romans placed any preference for slavery, or exceptions, based on race or country of origin. As the vast majority were captured as the result of Roman wars, wherever there were Roman victories, there would be new slaves. ![]() There was no ethnic or territorial preference for the taking of slaves. In the ancient world, slaves were taken simply based upon need or want. Till though, in some places such as Pergamum, on the western coast of present day Turkey, the slave population may have been around 40,000 people, or 1/3 of the city's total population.Īt the height of the Roman Empire in the mid second century AD, some have estimated that the total slave population may have approached 10 million people, or approximately 1/6 of the population as a whole. In outlying provinces, the numbers are certainly far less substantial, dropping to between an estimated 2 and 10% of the total. One such estimate suggests that the slave population in Rome circa 1 AD, may have been as much as 300,000 to 350,000 of the 900,000 total inhabitants. The slave population was at least equal to that of freedmen (non-citizens), and has been estimated at anywhere from 25 to 40% of the population of the city as a whole. ![]() ![]() By the end of these civil wars and general social disorder, slaves were abundantly present in Rome. The three servile wars in the 2nd and 1st centuries BC, with the rebellion of Spartacus in the 70's BC the most notable, showed that the social system was dangerous and unhealthy. Not only did slavery help push the Roman lower classes into organized mobs, but the slaves themselves understandably revolted against oppression. Slaves Made Up a Significant Percentage of the Roman Population Though there are many factors involved in the Fall of the Republic, slavery and its effects rippled throughout every aspect of that turbulent time period. As the rift between Senatorial elite ( optimates) and social reformers ( populares) grew, the use of the unemployed, landless, yet citizen mobs were an overwhelming ploy grinding away at the ability of the Senate to govern. These issues had a great destabilizing effect on the social system which had a direct role in the demise of the Republic. Cheap slave labor replaced work for the average citizen and the rolls of the unemployed masses grew to epidemic proportions. Farms originally run by small business families throughout Italy were soon gobbled up and replaced by enormous slave run plantations owned by the aristocratic elite. The mass influx of slaves during this time period first was a sign of great wealth and power, but later destabilized an already fragile Roman class system. The Roman conquests of Carthage, Macedonia and Greece in the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC altered what was once a luxury and privilege for the ruling elite into the predominant factor driving both social and economic policies for the Republic as a whole. Though slavery was prevalent in households throughout the city itself, it was on the farms and plantations where it had its greatest effect. Whilst it was commonplace throughout the Mediterranean region, and the Hellenistic regions in the east, it was not nearly so vital to others as it was to the dominance of Rome.Īs the Romans consolidated their hegemony of Italy and Sicily, followed by the systematic conquest of western Europe, countless millions of slaves were transported to Rome, the Italian countryside and Latin colonies all over Europe. Slavery in the ancient world, not to mention in the city of Rome itself, was vital to both the economy and even the social fabric of society. ![]() 27 dresses song bar7/30/2023 ![]() Jane, played by Katherine Heigl (my favorite role of hers after Izzie Stevens in “Grey’s Anatomy”) is seemingly in love with weddings and wedding planning, though she strangely does not work in the wedding industry. Let’s start with the boy-meets-girl part though. It also has plenty of light moments and laughs. It isn’t as heavy as all that sounds though. It touches on selflessness, and relationships between women, as well. The Movie also delves into tricky family dynamics such as sibling rivalry, the loss of a parent at a young age, and the challenges of being the oldest, and being the youngest. ![]() It has more storyline than just boy-meets-girl, though there is that. It is one of my favorite “Rom Coms” from the early aughts. It was directed by Anne Fletcher, and it was written by Aline Brosh McKenna. And she was right.27 Dresses was released in 2008. “She went on a crazy lobbying effort, calling the head of the studio, calling me 5,000 times, as if it was like the most important piece of legislation facing Congress, to stop us from changing the song. When writer Aline found out, she fought hard to keep it in. “We were actually investigating some other songs, including “Brown Sugar” by the Rolling Stones,” said producer Glickman. Apparently a few weeks before they started shooting, the director thought the famous Elton John song was too slow. The famous “Bennie and the Jets” scene almost didn’t happen. Catherine Thomas, the woman in charge of the film’s wardrobe, scoured eBay, thrift stores, and catalogs looking for ugly bridesmaid dresses for the movie. The costume designer said the hardest part of her job was finding 27 dresses that would look unflattering on Katherine Heigl. “There was a lightness to that set that I don’t always experience, which I think shines through in the movie and gives it a really supportive, happy atmosphere.”ĥ. “It was nice to be on set with so many women,” said actress Judy Greer. In a rare Hollywood instance, the writer, director, and star of the rom-com were all women. “I wanted her to end up on her own, hilariously enough,” McKenna said.Ĥ. The writer had no interest in giving Jane a traditional happy wedding. “But no matter where we went with the story, we knew it was an incredible commercial idea.”ģ. “At the beginning, we had aspirations of this is going to be the An Unmarried Woman of the new millennium, which was a classic female drama directed by Paul Mazursky,” said Glickman. Producer Jon Glickman says that the original pitch was only about 60% of what the end movie ended up being. The movie was supposed to be a completely different film. “What I loved about it wasn’t just that she was in these weddings, but that she was the person that would pick up everyone from the airport, dog-sit for people, and I was always very fascinated by it.”Ģ. To be ranked in the Top 4 of 12 different people when you’re still not out of your 20s is pretty impressive,” said McKenna, who also wrote The Devil Weras Prada screenplay, said in a recent interview. “ Kate is so unbelievably nice that at the time I did the movie she’d been in 12 weddings. ![]() ![]() Yes, 27 Dresses is partly lifted from screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna’s friend Kate, whom she describes as a perpetual bridesmaid. (Remember the Gone With The Wind-themed wedding, anyone?) In honor of the film’s 10th anniversary, we share a little bit of trivia you might not know about this wedding film genre classic. The film, starring Katherine Heigl as a woman who has been a bridesmaid at 27 other weddings, yet never a bride, was a hit when it came out in 2007, and became a highly relatable movie for women who had suffered through similar indignities all in the name of keeping a bride happy on her big day. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the now classic romantic comedy, 27 Dresses. ![]() Remembrance poppy colours7/30/2023 ![]() While many people will be wearing the traditional red poppy, some will opt for a.
